La cérémonie de cette année a débuté par une nouvelle interprétation de «I'm the Only One» de Melissa Etheridge et Adam Lambert pour célébrer le 25e anniversaire de l'album révolutionnaire d'Etheridge, Yes I Am.
L'annonce des récompenses vient après que la première vague de lauréats ait été remise en avril lors de la cérémonie de Los Angeles . L'événement de New York a poursuivi le mouvement Together de GLAAD avec des célébrités et des participants portant des épinglettes bleues «&» représentant le travail de l'organisation sur des questions intersectorielles telles que l'immigration, la justice raciale, les droits des femmes et l'acceptation LGBTQ.
